Description

Governor Holshouser pitching in a game of horseshoe.
Transcription: Gov. nicks Wey. Eighteen years ago on August 31, George Flowers took his camera to the business end of the dedication of the Watauga County Farmer's Market in Boone where Gov. Jim Holshouser - a true "Local Boy Makes Good" story for the High Country - was pitching horseshoes with partner Alfred Adams. (To Holshouser's right is Guy Hunt, one of the governor's opponents in the contest.) Unexpectedly, one of Jim Holshouser's flying horseshoes bounced out of the box, hitting another one of his opponents, Dr. Herbert Wey, in the leg. Here, Gov. Holshouser comforts his good-natured "mark," who was at the time Chancellor of Appalachian State University. United Press International carried these photos far and wide.
