Description

A tractor plowing snow.
Transcription: Watauga County was declared a national disaster in the late winter of 1960, when successive Wednesday snows mounted up to nearly 100 inches in depth. Army helicopters were sent to drop food and livestock feed across the county. The Red Cross swung into action, working out of the old Parkway Hardware Office. Students from Appalachian were among the hundreds of volunteers who trekked into the remote rural reaches of the county, located people in need.
